What you have to know before testing a website for Userbrain

Last updated: January 14, 2015 by Stefan Rössler

We’re asking people to try using our customers’ websites so they can see whether their sites work as intended. One session should take somewhere between 5 and 10 minutes.

The first thing we want to make clear right away is that we’re testing the websites, not you. You can’t do anything wrong. All you have to do, is to think out loud: to say what you’re looking at, what you’re trying to do, and what you’re thinking. This will be a big help for the people building these websites.

Also, please don’t worry that you’re going to hurt anyone’s feelings. Our customers do this to improve the site, so they want to hear your honest reactions.

How to do a Userbrain test

You've got a URL and a description of the task you're supposed to do on this site? Perfect! This means you're ready to start testing:

  1. Start recording your screen and audio
  2. Read your task out loud
  3. Enter the URL into your browser (it's important that you don't know the website before recording your session)
  4. Try to complete your task and keep going for 5 to 10 minutes
  5. Stop your recording and upload your video

Frequently asked questions:

I already know the website you want me to test. Should I test it anyway?

No. Just tell us that you're already familiar with this site, and we'll find another one for you to test.

The task requires me to I sign up to a website, but I don't want to. Do I have to sign up anyway?

Yes, please. Some of our customers want to know how well their sign up process works for real people. If you don't want to sign up to their website, you can just make up a fantasy name and enter fake information to proceed.

Do you have an example video, so I know what you want me to do?

You can watch an example video here, but please remember: there's nothing you can do wrong. If you speak everything that comes to your mind, we're confident your videos will be great.
